Causes
A lack of antidiuretic hormone (due to a problem in the pituitary gland) or a failure of the kidney to respond to that hormone. It may be congenital or acquired.
Diagnosis
The vet first rules out much more common causes of excessive drinking/urination (diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, Cushing's) and then carries out specific tests.
Treatment
Depending on the type, hormone replacement therapy. It is essential that the animal ALWAYS has water available.
Prevention
Not preventable.
