Urinary stones (urolithiasis)

Formation of "stones" in the urinary tract. They can cause pain, blood in the urine and, most dangerously, block the flow of urine.

URGENT if the animal is unable to urinate (blockage). See the vet the same day if there is blood or straining when urinating.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Straining and pain when urinating
  • • Blood in the urine
  • • Passing small amounts of urine frequently
  • • Urinating outside the usual place
  • • Genital licking
  • • Complete blockage (no urine passes): EMERGENCY

Causes

Several types (struvite, calcium oxalate...) with different causes: urinary pH, diet, low water intake, infections, genetic factors.

Diagnosis

Urine analysis, X-rays and ultrasound. Analysing the stone (if removed) identifies the type and guides prevention.

Treatment

Depends on the type: some stones can be dissolved with a specific diet; others require surgery. A blockage is an emergency. The vet will design a prevention plan based on the type of stone.

Prevention

Plenty of water (wet food, water fountains), specific diets according to the type, treating urinary infections, check-ups if there is a history of stones.
