Causes
A genetic disease. Predisposed breeds: Persian, Exotic Shorthair and related breeds. A genetic test is available.
Diagnosis
Kidney ultrasound (the cysts are visible) plus a genetic test. Screening cats of predisposed breeds is advisable.
Treatment
There is no cure. It is managed the same as chronic kidney disease: renal diet, hydration, supportive medication. With good management, the cat can live for years with a good quality of life.
Prevention
Genetic testing before breeding to avoid perpetuating the disease. Screening ultrasound in predisposed breeds.
