Rhinitis

Inflammation of the nasal lining. Very common. It may be acute or become chronic.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Sneezing
  • • Nasal discharge (clear, purulent or bloody)
  • • Noisy breathing through the nose
  • • Rubbing the muzzle
  • • In chronic cases: nasal deformity or pain

Causes

Infections (viral, bacterial, fungal), allergies, foreign bodies (grass awns), dental problems that connect with the nose, and tumours in chronic cases.

Diagnosis

Examination plus tests according to the suspected cause: rhinoscopy, X-ray or CT scan, cultures, and biopsy in chronic cases.

Treatment

It depends on the cause: treating the infection, removing the foreign body, managing the allergy. Chronic rhinitis can be difficult to resolve completely.

Prevention

Vaccination (in cats), avoiding irritants, and addressing dental problems promptly.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if the sneezing and nasal discharge last more than 1-2 weeks, if there is blood, or if the discharge comes from a single nostril (which may indicate a foreign body or a localised problem).
