Pyelonephritis (kidney infection)

A bacterial infection affecting the kidney. More serious than a simple bladder infection: it can cause permanent kidney damage.

Severe🐕 Dogs🐈 Cats

This may be a veterinary emergency

URGENT if there is fever with lethargy and urinary signs: a kidney infection can leave lasting damage if it is not treated promptly.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Fever
  • Lethargy and loss of appetite
  • Pain in the lower back/kidney area
  • Drinking and urinating more than usual
  • Possible blood in the urine
  • Vomiting

Causes

Bacteria that travel up from the bladder or reach the kidney through the bloodstream. The risk is higher if there are stones, obstructions or poorly treated urinary infections.

Diagnosis

Urinalysis with culture, blood tests, kidney ultrasound.

Treatment

Antibiotics for an extended period, guided by culture. Supportive care. It is important to complete the full course of treatment.

Prevention

Treat urinary infections properly so they do not travel upwards, and manage any stones.
