Progressive liver damage that, when sustained over time, can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure. The liver has a great capacity for regeneration, so symptoms appear late.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Lethargy and weight loss
  • • Loss of appetite, vomiting
  • • Increased drinking and urination
  • • Jaundice (yellowish colour) in advanced stages
  • • Swollen abdomen due to fluid (ascites)
  • • Neurological signs in very advanced stages

Causes

Infections, toxins and medications, immune-mediated diseases, copper accumulation, metabolic problems. Sometimes the cause is not identified.

Diagnosis

Liver function blood tests, ultrasound and, for a definitive diagnosis, a liver biopsy.

Treatment

Treating the underlying cause when identified, a liver-support diet, liver-protective supplements, and management of complications. Early detection greatly improves the prognosis.

Prevention

Avoid toxins and the unnecessary use of medications, routine blood tests in senior pets, vaccination.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your pet is losing weight, eating poorly and drinking more than normal. Jaundice (a yellow tinge) warrants prompt examination without delay.
