Entropion

The edge of the eyelid rolls inwards, so the eyelashes and hair rub against the cornea. It is painful and damages the eye if not corrected.

Moderate🐕 Dogs🐈 Cats

Symptoms to watch for

  • Half-closed eye, watering
  • Redness of the eye
  • Discomfort, the animal rubs the eye
  • Eye discharge
  • Risk of corneal ulcers from the rubbing

Causes

Largely hereditary (breeds with abundant facial skin: Bulldog, Shar Pei, Chow Chow, Mastiffs). It can also appear as a result of scarring or chronic eye pain.

Diagnosis

Treatment

Corrective eyelid surgery. In very young puppies a temporary correction is sometimes carried out until they finish growing.

Prevention

Obtain puppies from breeders who select against this malformation.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your pet keeps one eye half-closed and watering. Continuous rubbing damages the cornea: it is best to correct it.
