Causes
A genetic basis in many large breeds (Dobermann, Great Dane, Boxer, Cocker Spaniel). In some cases it has been linked to certain deficient diets. Age is a contributing factor.
Diagnosis
Echocardiography, electrocardiogram (serious arrhythmias may be present), radiography, cardiac markers.
Treatment
Medications that support the heart and control arrhythmias, together with treatment of heart failure. The prognosis is guarded, but treatment improves quality and length of life.
Prevention
Cardiac screening in predisposed breeds (especially the Dobermann), and a good-quality, balanced diet.
