Causes
An inherited disease. Many breeds have identified mutations: Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador, Husky and others. Genetic tests are available.
Diagnosis
Ophthalmic examination (sometimes electroretinography) plus genetic testing in breeds with a known mutation.
Treatment
There is no treatment. Progression is inevitable, but blind dogs adapt very well if their environment is stable and safe.
Prevention
Genetic testing before breeding to avoid perpetuating the disease. Do not buy puppies from affected bloodlines.
