Causes
Three broad groups of causes: blood loss (haemorrhage, parasites, ulcers), destruction of red blood cells (immune-mediated diseases, babesiosis, toxins) or a failure of production (kidney disease, bone marrow disease, certain infections).
Diagnosis
A blood test (complete blood count) that confirms the anaemia and gives clues about the type. Then, further tests to find the underlying cause.
Treatment
Treating the underlying cause. In severe anaemia a blood transfusion may be needed as a supportive measure while the cause is treated.
Prevention
Depends on the cause: parasite control, avoiding toxins, health check-ups.
