History and origin
An ancient native breed, mentioned by Columella and Virgil. Accompanied the Castilian transhumance for centuries. Recognised by the FCI.
Recognised by the FCI within Group 2 (mastiffs). In the UK it appears on farms and estates as a guardian, as well as in homes with space. Adults living to 10-12 years: the short average lifespan is a consequence of the extreme size and calls for specific care.
Temperament and character
Calm, brave, independent. Bonded to the flock and the family. Decides for itself when to intervene. NOT obedient in a military style: a partner to the shepherd. Needs daily mental stimulation — scent games, food-stuffed Kongs and short tricks channel its energy better than physical exercise alone. Responds best to positive reinforcement: physical punishment causes fear, anxiety and reactivity — coercive methods are NOT recommended by veterinary behaviourists. Sensitive to the family's mood: it senses tension and picks up on it.

Children: excellent with its own family. Other dogs: tolerant. Livestock: an instinctive protector.
