Von Willebrand disease

A hereditary clotting disorder, the most common one in dogs. The animal bleeds more than normal because it is missing or has a poorly functioning clotting factor.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Excessive bleeding after a wound, surgery or the loss of a tooth
  • • Nosebleeds or bleeding from the gums
  • • Blood in the urine or faeces
  • • Bruises easily
  • • Many dogs are fine until they have a bleed or surgery

Causes

A hereditary disease. Predisposed breeds: Dobermann (the most affected), Shetland Sheepdog, Scottish Terrier and others. A genetic test is available.

Diagnosis

Specific clotting tests plus a genetic test in predisposed breeds. It is advisable to do this BEFORE any surgery in at-risk breeds.

Treatment

There is no cure. It is managed by: avoiding drugs that affect clotting, planning surgeries with precautions (sometimes a preventive transfusion) and treating bleeds.

Prevention

Genetic testing before breeding in predisposed breeds. Know your dog's status before surgery.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your dog bleeds more than normal from small wounds or loses blood from its nose for no reason. In at-risk breeds, it is advisable to test before operating.
