Parásitos

Trichuriasis (whipworm)

Infection with the whipworm Trichuris, which lives in the large intestine. Its eggs are very resistant and persist in the soil for years, making it hard to eradicate.

Moderate🐕 Dogs

Symptoms to watch for

  • Chronic or intermittent diarrhoea, sometimes with blood and mucus
  • Weight loss
  • Straining to defecate
  • In heavy infestations: anaemia, weakness
  • Many dogs have few symptoms

Causes

The whipworm Trichuris vulpis. It is transmitted by ingesting eggs from the soil. The eggs survive in the environment for years.

Diagnosis

Faecal analysis. The eggs are shed intermittently, so several samples may need to be tested.

Treatment

An effective wormer against whipworms, often in repeated courses. Environmental hygiene to reduce reinfection.

Prevention

Regular deworming, picking up faeces daily, and avoiding heavily contaminated areas.

When should you see the vet?
