Causes
Cats become infected by hunting infected prey. They shed oocysts in their faeces only for a few weeks after the first infection. People are more often infected through raw meat than from cats.
Diagnosis
Blood test (serology). The vet interprets whether the infection is active or past.
Treatment
Most cases need no treatment. Symptomatic cases are treated with specific antibiotics.
Prevention
Prevent the cat from hunting or eating raw meat, and clean the litter tray daily (oocysts take 1-5 days to become infective). Pregnant women should avoid cleaning the litter tray or wear gloves.
