A mange in cats caused by the Notoedres mite. Highly contagious between cats and intensely itchy. It can mildly affect people.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Very intense itching
  • Crusting and scaling, especially on the ears, face and neck
  • Hair loss
  • Thickening of the skin
  • Wounds from scratching

Causes

The mite Notoedres cati, highly contagious through direct contact between cats.

Diagnosis

Skin scraping examined under the microscope.

Treatment

Specific antiparasitics (selamectin and others). Treat all cats in contact and the environment.

Prevention

External antiparasitic, avoid contact with infected cats, quarantine new cats.

See your vet if your cat has intense itching with crusting on the face and ears. It is highly contagious between cats.
