Causes
The bacterium Salmonella, found in raw meat, eggs, prey and contaminated faeces. Higher risk with poorly managed raw diets, puppies and immunocompromised animals.
Diagnosis
Faecal culture to identify the bacterium.
Treatment
Supportive care (hydration, symptom control). Antibiotics are reserved for severe cases or those with a generalised infection, to avoid creating carriers. Strict hygiene.
Prevention
Avoid poorly handled raw meat, keep food bowls hygienic, wash your hands. Especially important if there are children or immunocompromised people in the home.
