Inflammation and the formation of lumps between a dog's toes. It is uncomfortable and tends to recur if the underlying cause is not treated.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Reddish or purplish lumps between the toes
  • • Lameness and constant licking of the paw
  • • Pain when putting weight on the paw
  • • May discharge pus

Causes

Hairs that become embedded in the skin, allergies, foreign bodies, infection, moisture, paw conformation. It is often multifactorial.

Diagnosis

Examination of the paw, cytology and a search for the underlying cause (allergy, Demodex, foreign body).

Treatment

Treating the inflammation and infection, removing foreign bodies. KEY: identify and treat the underlying cause or it will recur. Chronic cases may require surgery.

Prevention

Dry the paws well, treat allergies, check the paws after walks in the countryside.

See your vet if your dog is lame with lumps between the toes or licks a paw non-stop.
