Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea)

Inflammation of the cornea, the transparent layer of the eye. It can cloud the cornea and affect vision if left untreated.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Eye with a cloudy or bluish appearance
  • • Ocular redness
  • • Watering and discomfort
  • • The animal squints the eye
  • • In pigmentary keratitis: a dark patch covers the cornea

Causes

Dry eye, abnormal eyelashes, trauma, infections, exposure (brachycephalic breeds that cannot close the eye properly), immune-mediated causes.

Diagnosis

Ophthalmic examination. The vet stains the cornea to rule out ulcers and measures tear production.

Treatment

Depends on the cause: specific eye drops, treating the dry eye or the abnormal eyelashes. Pigmentary keratitis in brachycephalic breeds requires lifelong management.

Prevention

Treat dry eye and abnormal eyelashes early, and protect prominent eyes.

When should you see the vet?

See the vet if your pet's eye looks cloudy, bluish or has a dark patch over the cornea.
