Causes
Contact with hot surfaces or liquids, fire, chemicals, electrical cables (common in puppies and in reptiles with poorly protected heat sources), intense sun.
Diagnosis
Examination of the injury. The vet assesses the depth and extent.
Treatment
FIRST AID: cool the area with room-temperature water (NOT ice) for several minutes, cover it with a clean, damp cloth, and go to the vet. Do NOT apply creams, toothpaste or home remedies. Extensive burns are an emergency.
Prevention
Protect heat sources (terrariums, heaters), take care with hot liquids, keep electrical cables out of the reach of puppies.
