Infecciosas

Psittacosis (avian chlamydiosis)

A bacterial infection common in birds, especially psittacines (parrots, budgies, lovebirds). It is a zoonosis: it can be transmitted to people.

Severe🦜 Birds Contagious Zoonosis

Symptoms to watch for

  • Ruffled plumage, listless bird
  • Nasal and ocular discharge
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Diarrhoea, sometimes greenish
  • Weight loss
  • Lethargy · some birds are carriers without symptoms

Causes

The bacterium Chlamydia psittaci, present in the secretions and droppings of infected birds. It is spread by inhaling contaminated dust. Stress (transport, changes) makes it more likely to appear.

Diagnosis

Specific tests (PCR) on samples from the bird. Important because of the zoonotic risk.

Treatment

A specific antibiotic for a prolonged period, under veterinary supervision. Strict hygiene of the environment.

Prevention

Quarantine new birds, keep the cage clean, avoid overcrowding, reduce stress, and buy birds from reliable sources.

When should you see the vet?

See an avian vet if your bird is lethargic, with ruffled plumage and difficulty breathing. Mention the suspicion: it is a zoonosis and requires hygiene precautions.

WetAi guides you and takes you to the vet; it does not diagnose.
