Piel y pelo

Pyoderma (bacterial skin infection)

A bacterial infection of the skin, almost always secondary to another problem (allergy, parasites, moisture). Very common in dogs.

Moderate🐕 Dogs🐈 Cats

Symptoms to watch for

  • Spots, pustules or blisters
  • Reddened, hairless areas
  • Circular crusts (epidermal collarettes)
  • Bad smell
  • Variable itching

Causes

Overgrowth of bacteria (particularly Staphylococcus) when the skin barrier is damaged by allergy, scratching, moisture or skin folds.

Diagnosis

Clinical examination, skin cytology (looking at the bacteria under the microscope) and, if it recurs, a culture with antibiotic sensitivity testing.

Treatment

Topical antibiotics (shampoos, sprays) in mild cases; oral antibiotics for extensive ones. You must ALWAYS identify and treat the underlying cause, or it will recur.

Prevention

Treat the underlying cause (allergies, parasites), keep the skin dry and clean, and dry any skin folds thoroughly.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if you notice spots, crusts or a bad smell on the skin. Do not use antibiotics without a prescription — bacterial resistance is a serious problem.

WetAi guides you and takes you to the vet; it does not diagnose.
