Causes
Heart tumours (a common cause in older dogs), infections, bleeding, and idiopathic causes. Large breeds are at greater risk.
Diagnosis
Echocardiography (the key test, which shows the fluid), X-rays, and electrocardiogram.
Treatment
EMERGENCY: drainage of the fluid (pericardiocentesis) to relieve the heart. Afterwards, treatment of the cause. Some cases require surgery.
Prevention
Difficult to prevent. Cardiac check-ups in senior pets allow it to be detected earlier.
