Causes
A highly resistant virus (parvovirus) that spreads through the faeces of infected dogs. It survives for months in the environment. Unvaccinated puppies aged 6 weeks to 6 months are the most vulnerable.
Diagnosis
Rapid antigen test on faeces (in the clinic) plus blood tests. Early diagnosis saves lives.
Treatment
VETERINARY EMERGENCY. Hospitalisation with intensive fluid therapy, anti-emetics, antibiotics for secondary infections, and nutritional support. There is NO possible home treatment.
Prevention
VACCINATION. It is the only effective protection: complete the puppy course and boosters. Until vaccination is complete, avoid areas with unknown dogs.
