Causes
A highly resistant virus that survives for months in the environment. It is spread through faeces and secretions. Unvaccinated kittens, shelters and colonies are the high-risk settings.
Diagnosis
A faecal test plus blood work (a drastic drop in white blood cells, hence the name "panleukopenia").
Treatment
EMERGENCY. Hospitalisation with intensive fluid therapy, antiemetics, antibiotics and supportive care. There is no home treatment.
Prevention
VACCINATION: this is a CORE (essential) vaccine for all cats. Kitten schedule plus boosters.
