Causes
Vigorous shaking or scratching of the ear ruptures a blood vessel inside the ear flap. The underlying cause is almost always otitis, mites or an allergy that causes the itching.
Diagnosis
Visual diagnosis. The vet also examines the ear to find the cause of the scratching.
Treatment
Drainage of the haematoma and, depending on the case, surgery to prevent it recurring and to stop the ear becoming deformed (cauliflower ear). It is essential to treat the underlying otitis or itching.
Prevention
Treat ear infections and ear itching promptly so the animal does not shake or scratch violently.
