Pneumonia

Inflammation of the lung tissue, usually caused by infection. It is serious: it compromises oxygenation. It can be the complication of a poorly treated respiratory infection.

URGENT: breathing difficulty with fever and severe lethargy needs immediate veterinary attention.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Wet cough
  • Rapid, laboured breathing
  • Fever
  • Severe lethargy and weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pale or bluish gums in severe cases
  • Nasal discharge

Causes

Bacterial, viral or fungal infection; aspiration of fluid or food (aspiration pneumonia); complication of another respiratory disease.

Diagnosis

Chest X-ray, blood tests, sometimes culture. Auscultation helps guide the diagnosis.

Treatment

Antibiotics (if bacterial), fluid therapy, oxygen in severe cases, respiratory physiotherapy. Moderate to severe cases require hospitalisation.

Prevention

Treat mild respiratory infections properly so they do not become complicated, vaccination, and prevent puppies/seniors from getting cold.
