Causes
Toxocara/Toxascaris worms. Puppies and kittens are infected from the mother. Adults become infected by swallowing eggs from the environment or infected prey.
Diagnosis
Faecal analysis (detection of eggs). Sometimes the worms are seen directly.
Treatment
An internal wormer following your vet's recommended schedule. In puppies and kittens, frequent worming (every 2 weeks until 3 months of age).
Prevention
Regular internal worming: puppies and kittens every 2 weeks at first, adults every 3 months. Pick up faeces and practise good hand hygiene (important where there are children).
