Lymphoma

Cancer of the lymphatic system, one of the most common cancers in dogs and cats. It comes in several forms and often responds well to treatment.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Swollen lymph nodes (lumps under the jaw, in front of the shoulders, behind the knees)
  • • Lethargy, weight loss
  • • Loss of appetite
  • • Depending on the form: vomiting/diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, skin lesions
  • • In cats it is sometimes linked to FeLV

Causes

Cancer of the lymphocytes. The cause is multifactorial. In cats, FeLV infection is a risk factor.

Diagnosis

Needle aspirate or biopsy of a lymph node or the mass, blood work, and imaging to assess how far it has spread.

Treatment

Chemotherapy is the main treatment and, in dogs, it is usually well tolerated, achieving long remissions with a good quality of life. The prognosis depends on the type and extent of the disease.

Prevention

Not preventable. In cats, vaccination against FeLV reduces one risk factor.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if you notice swollen lymph nodes (lumps) or weight loss and lethargy. Early detection improves the treatment options.
