Intertrigo (skin fold dermatitis)

Inflammation and infection of the skin within folds, where moisture and heat build up. Typical of breeds with lots of skin folds.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Red, irritated skin within the folds (face, lips, vulva, tail)
  • Bad odour
  • Moisture and discharge
  • Discomfort or itching
  • Thickening of the skin in the fold

Causes

Build-up of moisture, heat and bacteria/fungi within the folds. Predisposed breeds: Bulldog, Pug, Shar Pei, Pekingese, Cocker Spaniel (lip folds).

Diagnosis

Visual examination of the folds. Cytology to identify bacteria or yeasts.

Treatment

Clean and thoroughly dry the folds daily, along with topical antimicrobial treatment. In severe or recurrent cases, surgery to reduce the folds.

Prevention

Clean and dry the folds regularly, and keep weight under control (obesity creates more folds).

See the vet if the folds are red, moist or smell bad. It is easy to manage if caught early.
