Causes
A tumour of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Most common in middle-aged to older dogs.
Diagnosis
Blood tests showing low blood sugar together with high insulin at the same time, and an ultrasound scan to locate the tumour.
Treatment
Surgery to remove the tumour when possible. Medical and dietary management (frequent meals) to control the drops in blood sugar. The prognosis depends on how far the disease has spread.
Prevention
Not preventable.
