Feline immunodeficiency (FIV)

A virus that progressively damages the cat's immune system, conceptually similar to human HIV (but it does NOT infect people). A FIV+ cat can live a long, normal life with proper care.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Recurrent infections (mouth, skin, respiratory tract)
  • • Chronic inflammation of the gums (gingivostomatitis)
  • • Slow weight loss
  • • Intermittent fever
  • • Long periods with no symptoms at all

Causes

The FIV virus, transmitted mainly through bite wounds in fights (saliva). Unneutered males with outdoor access are at the highest risk. It is NOT transmitted to humans.

Diagnosis

Quick blood test. It is advisable to test rescued cats and before introducing cats to one another.

Treatment

There is no cure. The key is to prevent and promptly treat secondary infections, provide good nutrition, carry out regular check-ups and keep the cat stress-free. Many FIV+ cats live just like a healthy cat.

Prevention

Neutering (reduces fighting), keeping the cat indoors, and testing before introducing a new cat. There is no effective vaccine available in Europe.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet for FIV testing in rescued cats, or if there are recurrent infections or chronic gingivitis. A FIV+ diagnosis is NOT a death sentence.
