Urinarias

Urinary incontinence

Involuntary leakage of urine. The animal has no control over it — it is not a behavioural problem. Common in spayed females of middle to older age.

Mild🐕 Dogs🐈 Cats

Symptoms to watch for

  • Dribbling of urine, especially when lying down or asleep
  • Urine stains on the bedding
  • Damp genital area, with possible skin irritation
  • The animal is unaware of the leakage

Causes

Common cause: weakness of the urethral sphincter linked to the lack of hormones after spaying (females). Also: malformations, neurological problems, infections and stones.

Diagnosis

Urine analysis (to rule out infection), sometimes an ultrasound scan or additional tests depending on the suspected cause.

Treatment

Very good response to medical treatment that strengthens the sphincter tone. The vet chooses the medication according to the case.

Prevention

Not always preventable. If it appears after spaying, effective treatment is available.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your pet dribbles urine or wakes up with wet bedding. Do NOT tell her off — she is not doing it on purpose and it can be treated.

WetAi guides you and takes you to the vet; it does not diagnose.
