Hyphaema (blood inside the eye)

Presence of blood within the anterior chamber of the eye. The blood is visible inside the eye and may block vision. It indicates a serious problem.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Visible blood inside the eye (red at the front of the eye)
  • Loss of vision in that eye
  • Possible eye pain
  • Depending on the cause, other general signs

Causes

Trauma, high blood pressure, clotting disorders, intraocular inflammation (uveitis), tumours. It is often a sign of a general problem.

Diagnosis

Ophthalmic examination plus a search for the underlying cause (measuring blood pressure, clotting tests).

Treatment

Treatment of the underlying cause and of the eye. Acting quickly is important to preserve vision and to detect the general problem causing it.

Prevention

Control high blood pressure and clotting disorders, and prevent trauma.
