Causes
Canine herpesvirus, contagious through contact. Dangerous in neonates because they do not regulate their temperature well and the virus replicates better in cold bodies.
Diagnosis
In neonates that have died, a post-mortem examination. In adults, serology.
Treatment
In neonates the prognosis is poor; keeping them warm helps. In adults treatment is not usually needed.
Prevention
Keep newborn puppies well warmed, and avoid contact between pregnant bitches and unfamiliar dogs during the last third of pregnancy.
