Intervertebral disc herniation

An intervertebral disc slips or ruptures and compresses the spinal cord. It can cause anything from pain to paralysis. It is common in chondrodystrophic breeds.

URGENT if there is weakness, incoordination or paralysis of the legs: early surgery can make the difference between walking again or not. Severe back pain also warrants prompt assessment.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Back or neck pain: the animal cries out and is reluctant to move
  • • Weakness or incoordination of the legs
  • • Dragging the legs
  • • In severe cases: paralysis, incontinence
  • • Hunched, stiff posture

Causes

Degeneration of the intervertebral disc. Highly predisposed breeds: Dachshund (the most affected), French Bulldog, Pekingese, Beagle, Basset Hound. Jumping and being overweight are risk factors.

Diagnosis

Neurological examination plus MRI (the test of choice) or CT scan.

Treatment

Mild cases (pain only): strict rest, anti-inflammatories, pain control. Cases with marked neurological deficit: urgent surgery. How quickly action is taken has a major influence on recovery.

Prevention

Weight control, avoiding jumps from height (sofa, bed) in predisposed breeds, using ramps, and a harness instead of a collar.
