Causes
Degeneration of the intervertebral disc. Highly predisposed breeds: Dachshund (the most affected), French Bulldog, Pekingese, Beagle, Basset Hound. Jumping and being overweight are risk factors.
Diagnosis
Neurological examination plus MRI (the test of choice) or CT scan.
Treatment
Mild cases (pain only): strict rest, anti-inflammatories, pain control. Cases with marked neurological deficit: urgent surgery. How quickly action is taken has a major influence on recovery.
Prevention
Weight control, avoiding jumps from height (sofa, bed) in predisposed breeds, using ramps, and a harness instead of a collar.
