Haemangiosarcoma

An aggressive cancer of the blood vessels. Common in the spleen and heart. It is dangerous because it can rupture and cause sudden internal bleeding.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Often NO symptoms until a crisis occurs

  • • Swollen abdomen
  • • Intermittent lethargy and exercise intolerance
  • • Weight loss

Causes

A malignant tumour of the blood vessels. Predisposed breeds: German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador. More common in older dogs.

Diagnosis

Ultrasound and X-rays detect the masses. It is often diagnosed during a bleeding crisis. Biopsy confirms the diagnosis.

Treatment

Surgery (e.g. removing the spleen) plus chemotherapy. The prognosis is guarded due to the tendency to bleed and metastasise. Managing the dog's quality of life is a priority.

Prevention

Not preventable. Ultrasound scans during senior health checks in at-risk breeds may detect masses before a crisis.
