Glaucoma

A rise in pressure inside the eye that damages the optic nerve. It is very painful and can cause irreversible blindness within hours or days. It is an ophthalmic emergency.

EMERGENCY: a red, painful eye with a dilated pupil or a cloudy appearance needs IMMEDIATE veterinary attention. Every hour counts to save vision.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Intense eye pain (the animal is listless, subdued)
  • • Red eye
  • • Cloudy or bluish cornea
  • • Dilated pupil that does not respond to light
  • • Visibly enlarged eye in advanced cases
  • • Loss of vision

Causes

Primary (hereditary · predisposed breeds: Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Husky) or secondary to another eye disease (lens luxation, inflammation, tumour).

Diagnosis

Measurement of the intraocular pressure with a tonometer. It is a quick and crucial test.

Treatment

EMERGENCY: the pressure must be lowered as soon as possible with medication to save vision. Depending on the case, lifelong medical treatment or surgery. Untreated glaucoma leads to blindness and a painful eye.

Prevention

In predisposed breeds, regular eye check-ups. Treating other eye conditions that can lead to glaucoma promptly.
