Anal gland impaction

The anal glands (or anal sacs) are two small pouches on either side of the anus that secrete a strong-smelling fluid. When they fail to empty properly, they become impacted, inflamed and can get infected or form an abscess. It is a very common problem, especially in small dogs.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • The animal drags its bottom along the ground (scooting)
  • • Persistent licking or biting at the anal area
  • • Strong, unpleasant smell
  • • Discomfort when sitting
  • • In advanced cases: a lump, redness or discharge next to the anus

Causes

Soft stools that don't press on the glands as they pass, narrow ducts, being overweight, allergies, lack of fibre. Small breeds are predisposed.

Diagnosis

The vet palpates and manually empties the glands to check their condition.

Treatment

Manual expression by the vet. If there is an infection or abscess: antibiotics, drainage and cleaning. A fibre-rich diet to encourage natural emptying. Some animals need periodic expressions.

Prevention

A diet with adequate fibre, a healthy weight, and treating any underlying allergies. If your pet has recurring problems, maintenance expressions.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your pet scoots its bottom or licks its anus persistently. Urgent if there is a lump, redness or pus next to the anus (abscess).
