Chronic, painful wounds and tunnels around the anus. It is an immune-mediated disease, especially common in the German Shepherd.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Wounds, ulcers and discharging tunnels around the anus
  • • Intense pain when defecating
  • • Constant licking of the area
  • • Foul odour
  • • Constipation due to pain
  • • More common in the German Shepherd

Causes

An immune-mediated disease. The conformation of the tail (a low-set tail that covers the anal area) predisposes to its development. The German Shepherd is the most affected breed.

Diagnosis

Examination of the perianal area. The vet assesses the extent of the lesions.

Treatment

Immunosuppressants (the main treatment today is medical, no longer surgical as first-line), diet, hygiene. It is a chronic disease that requires lifelong management.

Prevention

Not preventable. Early detection makes it easier to manage.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your dog has discharging wounds around the anus or is in a lot of pain when defecating.
