Causes
An epulis is a benign growth of the gum. Other oral masses can be malignant (melanoma, carcinoma). The cause varies depending on the type.
Diagnosis
Biopsy of the mass to determine whether it is benign or malignant — essential, as it cannot be told just by looking.
Treatment
Surgical removal. Treatment and prognosis depend on the specific type: benign epulides have a good prognosis; malignant masses require a more extensive approach.
Prevention
Check the mouth regularly and maintain good dental hygiene.
