Endocarditis (heart valve infection)

An infection of the heart valves. Bacteria form colonies on the valves, damage them and can release fragments that travel through the bloodstream.

Severe🐕 Dogs

This may be a veterinary emergency

See your vet if your dog has intermittent fever, lethargy and lameness that shifts from leg to leg.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Fever that comes and goes
  • Lethargy and weight loss
  • A new or changing heart murmur
  • Shifting lameness (due to emboli in the joints)
  • Exercise intolerance

Causes

An infection elsewhere in the body (dental, urinary or a wound) reaches the heart valves through the bloodstream.

Diagnosis

Echocardiography (the valve lesions can be seen), blood cultures to identify the bacteria, and blood work.

Treatment

A prolonged course of antibiotics, guided by the culture, along with cardiac support. The prognosis is guarded: early detection is key.

Prevention

Treat infections elsewhere in the body properly and maintain good dental health.
