Cognitive dysfunction (senile dementia)

Cognitive decline in the older pet, comparable to Alzheimer's in humans. It cannot be cured, but it can be slowed and the animal's wellbeing improved.

Moderate🐕 Dogs🐈 Cats

Symptoms to watch for

  • Disorientation: gets "lost" in familiar places, stares at the wall
  • Changes in the sleep-wake cycle: restless at night, sleepy during the day
  • Less interaction with the family
  • Forgetting learned training, toileting indoors
  • Anxiety, vocalising for no apparent reason

Causes

Ageing of the brain, with degenerative changes. It affects older dogs and cats; prevalence increases with age.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis based on clinical signs plus ruling out other conditions that cause similar signs (pain, sensory problems, other illnesses).

Treatment

It cannot be cured, but it can be slowed: specific diets and supplements, mental enrichment, stable routines and sometimes medication. Keep the environment predictable and safe.

Prevention

Mental stimulation and exercise throughout life, a good-quality diet, and geriatric check-ups.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your older pet is disorientated, changes its sleep pattern or "is not itself". The sooner you act, the better it can be slowed.

WetAi guides you and takes you to the vet; it does not diagnose.
