A parasite that lives in the heart and the large blood vessels. It is transmitted by mosquitoes and is endemic in humid areas of the UK and mainland Europe (coastal regions, islands, river valleys). Fatal if left untreated.

Severe🐕 Dogs🐈 Cats

This may be a veterinary emergency

See your vet if there is a chronic cough or unexplained tiredness, especially in an endemic area. Have the annual test done: preventing is easy, treating is difficult.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Chronic cough
  • Tiredness and reduced ability to exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Difficulty breathing
  • In advanced cases: swollen abdomen, fainting
  • Sometimes asymptomatic for a long time

Causes

Larvae of the Dirofilaria worm transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The larvae migrate and the adults lodge in the right side of the heart and the pulmonary artery.

Diagnosis

Blood test (antigen test) and detection of microfilariae. X-rays and ultrasound to assess the cardiac damage.

Treatment

Treating a dog with adult worms is complex, lengthy and carries risks (as the worms die they can cause emboli). This is why PREVENTION is essential.

Prevention

A monthly preventive tablet or spot-on during the mosquito season (or all year round in warm areas). Annual test before starting prevention.
