Malassezia dermatitis

A skin infection caused by overgrowth of the yeast-like fungus Malassezia, which normally lives on the skin but proliferates when there is allergy, moisture or excess grease.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Itching
  • • Greasy skin and a characteristic bad (rancid) smell
  • • Reddening and darkening of the skin
  • • Affected areas: ears, folds, armpits, between the toes
  • • Recurrent ear infections

Causes

Overgrowth of the fungus when the skin's balance is disrupted: allergies, moisture, skin folds, hormonal problems. Predisposed breeds: Westie, Basset, Cocker.

Diagnosis

Skin cytology (the yeasts can be seen under the microscope with a "peanut" shape).

Treatment

Antifungal shampoos, topical or oral treatment depending on extent. Treating the underlying cause is essential.

Prevention

Dry folds and ears thoroughly, treat underlying allergies, and use maintenance shampoos if there is a tendency towards it.

See your vet if you notice greasy skin with a rancid smell and itching, especially on the ears and folds.
