Causes
Proliferation of the Demodex mite due to an immature immune system (puppies) or immunosuppression (illness, medication, stress). The localised juvenile form usually resolves on its own.
Diagnosis
Deep skin scraping examined under the microscope to see the mites.
Treatment
Mild localised form: often resolves on its own. Generalised form: specific antiparasitic drugs (isoxazolines) as prescribed by the vet, treat the secondary infection and the underlying cause.
Prevention
Do not breed from affected animals (there is a hereditary component in the generalised form), and maintain good immune and nutritional status.
