An infection caused by a fungus that mainly affects the upper respiratory tract and, in severe cases, the nervous system. More common in cats.
The fungus Cryptococcus, present in the environment (especially in bird droppings). It is inhaled. There is greater risk in immunocompromised animals.
Identification of the fungus in samples (cytology, culture) and antigen testing.
Antifungals for a prolonged period (months). The prognosis depends on how widespread the infection is.
Difficult to prevent. Avoid environments with large accumulations of bird droppings.
See the vet if there is chronic sneezing with nasal discharge, especially if a lump appears over the nose.
