Inflammation of the large intestine (colon). A common cause of diarrhoea, often with mucus and fresh blood.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Diarrhoea with mucus and/or fresh red blood
  • Urgency and straining to defecate
  • Frequent, small-volume bowel movements
  • Generally good overall condition
  • Sometimes flatulence

Causes

Diet changes, stress, parasites, intolerances, infections, IBD. Stress colitis is very common after travel or boarding.

Diagnosis

Clinical history plus faecal analysis. If it becomes chronic, the vet will run further tests.

Treatment

Mild cases: a specific high-fibre diet, probiotics, stress management. Persistent cases: treating the specific cause.

Prevention

Gradual diet changes, parasite control, reducing stress, and a good-quality diet.

See your vet if diarrhoea with blood and mucus lasts more than 3-4 days or recurs frequently.
