Tracheal collapse

Weakening of the tracheal rings, which flatten and make it harder for air to pass through. Typical of small-breed dogs of middle to older age.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • A characteristic dry cough, described as a "goose honk"
  • • Cough that worsens with excitement, exercise or pulling on the lead
  • • Exercise intolerance
  • • Breathing difficulty in severe cases
  • • Fainting in advanced cases

Causes

Weakness of the tracheal cartilage, partly genetic. Predisposed breeds: Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Toy Poodle. Being overweight and exposure to smoke make it worse.

Diagnosis

X-ray or fluoroscopy (to see the trachea in motion), and sometimes endoscopy.

Treatment

Mild cases: weight control, a harness instead of a collar, avoiding excitement, a smoke-free environment, cough suppressants. Severe cases: surgery or placement of a tracheal stent.

Prevention

Maintain a healthy weight, ALWAYS use a harness (never a collar) in predisposed breeds, and avoid tobacco smoke.

When should you see the vet?

See your vet if your small dog has a recurrent dry, "honking" cough. Urgent if there is breathing difficulty or fainting.
