Feline cholangitis

Inflammation of the liver and bile ducts in cats. It is one of the most common liver diseases in cats, along with hepatic lipidosis.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • Lethargy and loss of appetite
  • • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin, gums and eyes)
  • • Vomiting
  • • Weight loss
  • • Fever in the acute form

Causes

An ascending bacterial infection from the intestine, or an inflammatory/immune-mediated process. It is often associated with pancreatitis and intestinal disease (feline triaditis).

Diagnosis

Blood tests (liver enzymes, bilirubin), ultrasound and, in unclear cases, a liver biopsy.

Treatment

Antibiotics if bacterial, anti-inflammatories if immune-mediated, and nutritional support. Treatment depends on the type and may be prolonged.

Prevention

Difficult to prevent. Early detection helps avoid complications.

See your vet if your cat is lethargic, is not eating and has a yellowish tinge to the gums or eyes.
