An intestinal infection caused by protozoa (coccidia). Common in puppies and young animals, especially in overcrowded conditions. In rabbits it can be serious.
Protozoa of the genus Isospora/Eimeria, spread through contaminated faeces. Common in breeding facilities, shelters and rabbit hutches with poor hygiene.
Faecal analysis to detect the parasite's oocysts.
Specific antiparasitic drugs (sulphonamides, toltrazuril) as prescribed by the vet. Intensive environmental hygiene.
Strict hygiene, picking up faeces, avoiding overcrowding, clean water and food. In rabbits, a clean and dry hutch.
See your vet if there is persistent diarrhoea in puppies or young animals, especially where several animals live together. In rabbits, any diarrhoea is an emergency.
